Last week the TR Digital Library published a historic letter from Booker T. Washington to Theodore Roosevelt. The letter reads: “My dear Mr. President—I shall be very glad to accept your invitation for dinner this evening at seven-thirty. Yours very truly, Booker T. Washington.”
TR’s decision to have Washington over for dinner at the White House shaped the discussion on race and his presidency. He was simultaneously applauded and indicted for the decision. The Theodore Roosevelt Center is proud to make this letter accessible and widely available.
