About the Theodore Roosevelt Center
Our Mission
The Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University (DSU) preserves and analyzes the legacy of America’s 26th president, one of the most remarkable statesmen and intellectuals in American history.
Launched in 2007, the Center has proactively accomplished this objective through the following major initiatives:
Major Initiatives
- Hosting an annual Theodore Roosevelt Symposium on the DSU campus and in Medora, North Dakota. The symposium features acclaimed speakers and authors while attracting thousands of visitors and scholars from all over the world.
- Creating the Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library to serve as a repository for all Roosevelt-related documents, photographs, and ephemera, providing instant access over the internet in a well-organized, comprehensible manner.
- Facilitating adult and student volunteer experiences and student internships, through which participants make a genuine and needed contribution to creating the digital library.
- Offering national and state-level educational programming, using primary resources. We were among the pilot group of sites presenting the Presidential Primary Sources Project to students in grades 6-12. Sponsored by Internet2, these live interactive sessions explore American history themes through the documents and artifacts of our Presidents. Students are able to ask questions of staff at the participating sites. In addition to this national education outreach, we have offered educational sessions in North Dakota and elsewhere, and we welcome requests or proposals from teachers for interactive sessions with their classrooms.
- Providing reference services to website visitors, including scholars and schoolchildren, professional researchers and popular media. We help users locate and understand the primary source materials in the digital library.
