Comments and Context
Theodore Roosevelt became a grandfather for the first time in 1911. His pleasure is evident, and cartoonist Shiras reflected Roosevelt’s trademark exuberance. The caption, “Foxy Grandpa,” is not entirely appropriate — a comic strip character by Carl E. Schultze who, in the eponymous Sunday feature forever played and foiled pranks in scuffles with his grandsons.
